4 Day Samburu Lodge Safari

Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu Game Reserve

Depart early in the morning from Nairobi at 7 a.m. being picked from the hotel or the airport and drive north past coffee plantations via Mt. Kenya to Samburu National Park. Arriving in time for lunch.

Samburu boasts itself with the presence of unique species such as Grevy’s zebra, the long-necked gerenuk, and various species of desert birds among the wildlife that shares this region of semi-arid habitat.

The name Samburu is a Masai word originating from ‘Samburr’ meaning a traditional leather bag for carrying honey and milk. The region is characterized by vast, open landscapes, dried river beds (depending on the season of the year) and red volcanic soil.

Rock outcroppings contrast against the dense woodland vegetation along the banks of Ewaso Nyiro meaning ‘river of brown water’, the river that gives life to the reserve. The Samburu areas is inhabited by the Samburu community who share a lot of values and culture with the Masai people.

You will arrive in time for lunch which will take place at the lodge. After lunch wait for the sun to cool down as you rest. Thereafter proceed with the first game viewing till sunset. After the afternoon game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2 – 3: Samburu Game Reserve

The whole day will be spent exploring this amazing game reserve with the early morning game drive. Before the sun rises, go on a mid-morning and the evening game drive with a lunch break in between. It gives you the refreshment of your mind as the park is not populated and not many people visit here; they have concentration of the elephants as well as leopards and especially along the river.

The whole day will be spent exploring on a game drive, watching crocodiles bask on muddy riverbanks and velvet monkeys frolic in the late afternoon sun. You will have a great opportunity to spot the five rare animal species only found north of the equator – the long necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe which is characterized by its liver-colored geometric patches defined by narrow white lines, the Grevy’s zebra which is smaller than the common zebra and looks more like a horse, the beisa oryx with black horizontal stripe running across its lower flank, and the Somali ostrich males which have blue-grey necks and thighs. Dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve – Nairobi
