What to Expect During Gorilla Trekking

To go gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the journey from Kampala takes a full day, with a short stop at the Equator along the way. Depending on the gorilla trekking group assigned to your permit, you may travel to one of four sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo, or Ruhija. We chose Nkuringo.

You will spend your first night there, and early the next morning, around 7:30 AM, you will set off for your Uganda gorilla trekking adventure, arriving at the starting point. Before entering the Uganda gorilla trekking reserve, there will be a short briefing session. During this introduction, you will learn all the rules and guidelines for your Uganda gorilla trekking experience.

After the briefing, you will begin your trek into Bwindi Forest, Uganda, accompanied by experienced park rangers as you search for the mountain gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a highly regulated activity because gorillas are endangered species. A special gorilla trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is required before participating in the experience.

The standard cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is USD 800 for non-residents. This permit is valid only for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

With the permit, you will be able to participate in one guided gorilla trekking excursion, spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family, and benefit from the services of gorilla trackers and UWA rangers.

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit can be booked through reputable tour operators such as Ravina Tours and Travels or directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Due to limited availability, gorilla trekking permits should always be booked in advance. Only a limited number of permits are issued each day for each gorilla family. It is always advisable to plan ahead and consider booking your gorilla trekking experience 3–6 months before your travel date to secure your place.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

  •

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
    • Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available throughout the year; however, weather conditions can significantly affect the overall trekking experience. Choosing the right time for gorilla trekking ensures better trail conditions, improved visibility, and the best possible experience during your adventure.
    Dry Seasons: June–September and December–February

The dry season in Uganda is generally considered the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda. During this period, rainfall is minimal, making the trekking trails less muddy and easier to navigate.

During the dry season, you can generally expect:

    • Easier and shorter treks.
    • Better lighting conditions for photography.
    • Better availability of top accommodation options.

The dry seasons are usually the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking, especially for first-time travellers. Accommodation prices during the dry season can be higher due to increased demand from travellers interested in gorilla trekking safaris.

Advantages of the Green Season (March–May and October–November)

The rainy season in Uganda offers a different but equally rewarding gorilla trekking experience. Although the weather conditions may be less favourable and trekking trails can become muddy and slippery, the rainforest becomes lush and vibrant, creating beautiful scenery.

Some of the main advantages of the green season include:

    • Fewer tourists during this period, meaning less crowded trekking experiences.
    • Lower accommodation prices, with better offers and discounts available at lodges.
    • Lush landscapes that create excellent conditions for bird watching.
    • A more intimate gorilla trekking experience.

Popular Uganda Safari Types

Typical Uganda safaris are not always only about wildlife viewing, but rather an adventure that takes different forms. Uganda is often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa” because of everything it has to offer — from beautiful landscapes and rich culture to incredible wildlife. The main types of safaris offered in Uganda include wildlife viewing safaris, cultural tours, chimpanzee trekking safaris, bird watching safaris, luxury safaris, and adventure safaris.

Uganda Wildlife Viewing Safari Tours:
These are the typical Uganda safari tours that mainly involve game drives through some of Uganda’s popular national parks, where you can enjoy amazing wildlife such as zebras, lions, giraffes, and elephants. Some of the best parks where you can visit and experience these adventures include Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
