A visit to Masai Mara National Reserve would be incomplete without a visit to the nearby Maasai community village. This one hour visit to a Maasai village is a chance to interact with the Maasai and get a glimpse into their culture, unique way of life and see first hand some of their customs and practices. The Maasai are the most famous tribal group in all of Africa. They populate vast areas of Southern areas of Kenya and are the dominant ethnic group surrounding the Masai Mara. This nomadic, warrior tribe which once held vast swathes of pre colonial Kenya, still retain many of their traditions as they live largely untouched by modern day civilization, in areas surrounding Masai Mara.

We offer boat safaris on Lake Naivasha to our guests. Lake Naivasha, at over 6,000 feet, is the highest lake in the Rift Valley and one of its most beautiful. Fringed by papyrus and with the extinct Mount Longonot as a backdrop, this is a wonderful place to watch and photograph birds. Over 400 species of birds have been seen in the Rift Valley, and Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and Hells Gate all offer great bird viewing opportunities.

At Loldia House we have a resident ornithologist and you can enjoy this wonderful bird life by boat around Lake Naivasha, and on game drives.

From boat trips on the lake you can get close to Cormorants drying their wings, Pink Backed Pelicans, Herons, colourful Kingfishers and Fish Eagles.

Other birds seen around the lake include the Goliath Heron, Jacana, Great White Egret, White Fronted Bee-eater and the Saddle- billed Stork. Lake Nakuru is surrounded by Acacia woodland and open grassland, and millions of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes fringe the lake in shades of pink.

Kenya is one of only 15 countries globally where more than 1,000 bird species have been recorded, and it lies third on the African avian diversity list after DR Congo and Tanzania.

This list includes the world’s two largest birds (Common and Somali ostrich, now regarded as separate species) and its bulkiest flying creature (Kori bustard), along with a wealth of raptors and a dazzling array of colorful bee-eaters, turacos, parrots, rollers, and passerines.

Birding Safaris are rewarding everywhere in Kenya. For dedicated birdwatching on a safari in Kenya, a well-planned two-week itinerary is likely to result in a trip list of 350–400 species, a figure that compares favorably with anywhere in the world.

The open savannah of southern Kenyan reserves such as Amboseli and the Masai Mara provides an excellent introduction to East Africa’s more common birds, with Superb starling, Purple grenadier, Lilac-breasted roller, and African grey hornbill all conspicuous.

There is another type of African safari you can take part in that’s a bit unusual… one where the emphasis isn’t so much on the wildlife as it is on the landscapes – specifically the vertical landscapes of Africa’s two tallest peaks, Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Both are world-class in elevation, higher than 17,000 ft (5,181 m), snow-capped at their summits, and come with incredible views of the landscapes below. And both can be accessed without any special climbing skills – no ropes needed. But you may need another type of skill: the ability to access your inner resolve to make it all the way to the top.

We offer safe, experienced five to seven-day expeditions up both peaks for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure few have experienced. Let’s learn more about each summit and how to prepare for your climb up one of the world’s highest mountains.

Experience the Essence of Mara on Hot Air Baloon!

A truly ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, flying in a Hot Air Balloon over the Masai Mara plains is an evocative experience that you have the chance to enjoy during any safari you take to Maasai Mara. The balloon take offs at the break of dawn, around 6am, gliding silently during the ride over the savannah grasslands below where you may spot a variety of wildlife. The flight lasts an hour and concludes with a ”Champagne Bush Breakfast” at the balloon landing site in the wilderness. The balloon is flown by a fully qualified and experienced Pilot and the balloons themselves are most often made by Cameron, a specialist hot air balloon manufacturer in Great Britain. The basket sizes vary and it is best to book the ride in advance as space is typically limited to a maximum of 16 passengers per balloon, often less if flying with a smaller basket. Prices for the 2023 ~ 2024 season range from US$ 455 to US$ 515 per person depending on which camp or lodge you will fly from in Masai Mara.
Child rates are available in certain cases for children under 12 years of age.

Booking the Balloon flight: Please send us your preferred date which has to be at earliest, the second day of your stay in Masai Mara.
We need to know where in Masai Mara you will be staying the night before, so as to check if a timely transfer is possible to the nearest Balloon ride take off site. Cancellations due to the Balloon not taking off are a possibility though rare, mainly due to adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds or heavy rain. In the event of a Balloon not taking off, passengers are refunded in full less minimal administration fees.
