5-Day Mount Kenya Trek (Chogoria down Sirimon)

Mount Kenya is the second-highest mountain in Africa and one of the most scenic destinations in Kenya. It is rich in vegetation, waterfalls, rivers, glaciers, and wildlife, making it a popular destination for hikers from around the world.
This 5-day trek follows the Chogoria route, known for its beautiful landscapes, before descending via the Sirimon route. Along the way, you will experience changing vegetation zones, open valleys, and dramatic mountain scenery.
The trek is suitable for both experienced and adventurous hikers, with the highlight being the summit at Point Lenana (4,985m). The package can also be customized to suit different preferences and fitness levels.

Details Itinerary

Pick up from your hotel at 7:00 am and depart Nairobi at 8:00 am. Drive through agricultural countryside to Chogoria town where you will stop for lunch.

After lunch, transfer by 4×4 to the edge of the bamboo forest. This marks the starting point of your trek into the mountain.

Hike through dense forest for about 10 km to reach Mount Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight stay at the bandas.

After breakfast, begin your trek at a steady and comfortable pace. The trail opens up with scenic views as you move away from the forest.

The route via Lake Ellis offers views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giant’s Billiards Table. You will enjoy a hot lunch by a stream along the way.

Continue trekking uphill to your campsite at around 3,600m. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Ellis campsite.

Start early and follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours. The trail joins the main Chogoria route at around 4,100m.

Enjoy breathtaking views of the Gorges Valley and surrounding landscapes. Stop for lunch at a stream before continuing the trek.

Arrive at Mintos Camp (4,200m) for dinner and overnight. You may take a short walk to the “Temple” viewpoint before resting.

Begin your summit attempt at around 3:00 am. Hike for about 3 hours to reach Point Lenana (4,985m) in time for sunrise.

After enjoying the views, descend to Shipton Camp for breakfast. The descent continues through Mackinder’s Valley with scenic views.

Continue for about 5 hours to Old Moses Camp (3,300m). Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

After breakfast, begin your descent through the moorland and forest zones. The walk takes about 3 hours to reach Sirimon Gate.

At the gate, meet your vehicle and prepare for the journey back to Nairobi. Enjoy the drive as you leave the mountain behind.

Arrive in Nairobi and drop off at your hotel, residence, or airport, marking the end of the trek.
