5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Highlights

This Mount Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route is a 5-day trekking experience offering a direct and structured path to the summit. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is one of the most popular options due to its hut accommodation, making it more comfortable compared to camping routes. It is also considered one of the more affordable ways to reach the summit.

The route follows a steady ascent through changing landscapes, beginning in rainforest and moving into moorland and alpine desert before reaching the summit zone. While shorter than other routes, it still offers incredible scenery and a rewarding challenge. The hut system provides basic but comfortable facilities, including sleeping areas and communal dining spaces.

This Tanzania Tours experience is fully supported with guides, porters, and prepared meals throughout the trek. With proper pacing and guidance, it provides a well-organized and achievable journey to Uhuru Peak.

Details Itinerary

Your Mount Kilimanjaro journey begins with a drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate, where registration is completed before starting the trek. The trail leads through dense rainforest, offering a cool and shaded environment with rich vegetation and occasional wildlife sightings.

The hike is steady and allows you to adjust gradually to the altitude. As you progress, the forest provides a peaceful and scenic introduction to the mountain.

Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Continue your climb as the landscape transitions from rainforest to moorland. The trail becomes more open, offering wider views of the surrounding terrain and the mountain above.

You will pass near Maundi Crater, where a short detour provides impressive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscape. The terrain becomes less dense, with unique vegetation typical of higher altitudes.

Arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

The journey continues into the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes more rugged and dry. This section involves crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, offering expansive and dramatic views.

The trek requires steady pacing as altitude increases significantly. The environment is more exposed, emphasizing the challenge of high-altitude trekking.

Arrive at Kibo Hut, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt. Dinner and early overnight.

The summit attempt begins before midnight, with a gradual ascent through steep and rocky terrain. This is the most demanding part of the climb, requiring both physical and mental endurance.

Reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is a remarkable achievement and the highlight of the journey.

After celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

On the final day, descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The trail becomes greener and more comfortable as you lose altitude.

Upon arrival, you will receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your climb. This moment reflects the effort and determination throughout the journey.

Transfer back to Moshi, Arusha, or the airport. End of trek.
