3-Day Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

Highlights

This 3-day adventure takes you deep into Kibale Forest National Park, famously known as the Primate Capital of the World. The park is home to 13 different species of primates, including chimpanzeesโ€”our closest relatives. Youโ€™ll enjoy a mix of exciting activities such as chimpanzee tracking, swamp walks, scenic drives, and cultural encounters with local communities.

Details Itinerary

Your safari begins with a scenic drive from Kampala or Entebbe to western Uganda, a journey that takes about 6โ€“7 hours. Along the way, youโ€™ll pass through lush green landscapes, tea plantations, and lively roadside markets. After lunch, there will be a chance to take a walk through a local market and interact with the friendly people in the area. As you approach Kibale Forest, keep an eye out for baboons, birds, and monkeys, which can often be seen near the road. Upon arrival, youโ€™ll check in at Kibale Forest Camp and relax for the night in a comfortable safari tent.

After an early breakfast, youโ€™ll head into Kibale Forest for your chimpanzee tracking adventure. The forest is home to 13 primate species, and your experienced guide will help you spot several types of monkeys, such as the red colobus, black-and-white colobus, Lโ€™Hoestโ€™s monkey, and grey-cheeked mangabey. The highlight of the morning is spending one unforgettable hour with the chimpanzees once they are located. The trek usually lasts 3 to 4 hours through the beautiful tropical rainforest.

In the afternoon, youโ€™ll visit Bigodi Swamp, a community-run wetland sanctuary known for its rich birdlife and monkey sightings. The walk takes you through local villages, coffee plantations, and farmlands, where youโ€™ll get a glimpse of everyday life in the region. Locals are welcoming and often happy to greet and interact with visitors. After the walk, youโ€™ll return to Kibale Forest Camp for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, youโ€™ll begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, which takes around 5โ€“6 hours. If time allows, you can enjoy a short city tour in Kampala. Highlights may include a visit to vibrant craft markets, the bustling Kampala taxi park (with a rooftop view for great photos), or a tour of the Gaddafi National Mosque, one of the largest mosques in East Africa. Lunch will be at a local restaurant of your choice in Kampala. Afterwards, you will either be dropped off at your hotel or transferred to the airport for your flight home.
