3-Day Gorilla Trekking in Uganda from Kigali

Highlights

Embark on a thrilling 3-day adventure from Kigali, Rwanda to the misty jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. This compact yet immersive experience brings you face-to-face with the majestic mountain gorillas, a life-changing wildlife encounter. The route and sector (Rushaga or Ruhija) are determined by gorilla permit availability, and the scenic drive includes cultural stops such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This is a perfect short safari for those seeking an intimate primate experience without long travel days.

Details Itinerary

Your gorilla trekking journey begins with a pickup from Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali. Depending on the location of your gorilla permit, you’ll cross into Uganda via either:

  • Cyanika Border (to Southern Bwindi – Rushaga sector), or
  • Katuna Border (to Northern Bwindi – Ruhija sector)

Enjoy a scenic drive through Rwanda’s famed hills and Ugandan countryside. Time permitting, you’ll visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or embark on a Kigali city tour before heading to Uganda. Upon arrival, you’ll check in at your lodge and settle in for a relaxed evening.

 Accommodation: Virunga Hotel

After an early breakfast (served at 6:00 AM), you’ll be transferred to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Equipped with trekking gear, lunch boxes, and water, you’ll set off into the jungle in search of mountain gorillas.

The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family assigned. Once found, you’ll spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat—a deeply emotional and humbling experience.

After the trek, you’ll return, freshen up, and transfer to Musanze, Rwanda, where you’ll spend the night in preparation for departure the next day.
