Day 1: Arusha – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Your journey begins with an early morning transfer from Arusha to Marangu Gate, where registration and permit formalities are completed. You will meet your mountain crew before starting the trek.
The trail passes through dense rainforest, offering chances to spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The hike is gentle and enjoyable as you walk under the forest canopy.
After several hours, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, the trek continues through the last section of rainforest before transitioning into heath and moorland. The landscape becomes more open, with shrubs and unique plants replacing tall trees.
As you gain altitude, you may enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks if the weather is clear. The trail becomes drier and more exposed as you continue climbing.
You will reach Horombo Hut after several hours of trekking, where you will have dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today you leave the moorland zone and enter the alpine desert, characterized by a dry and rocky landscape. Vegetation becomes minimal as you approach higher altitudes.
The trek offers dramatic views of Mawenzi’s rugged peaks and Kibo’s dome-shaped summit. The environment becomes more challenging as the air gets thinner.
Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 4: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
The summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing slowly through cold and dark conditions. The ascent is physically demanding due to high altitude and low temperatures.
You will reach Gilman’s Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where you will witness a breathtaking sunrise. This is the highest point in Africa and a major achievement. After celebrating, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight rest
Day 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha
After breakfast, you will begin your descent through moorland and back into the rainforest. The trail is long but easier as you head downhill.
As you approach lower elevations, the vegetation becomes lush again, and the air feels warmer and more comfortable.
At Marangu Gate, you will receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
