Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your climb begins with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where registration formalities are completed. After meeting your mountain crew, the trek starts through a dense rainforest filled with tall trees, birds, and wildlife.
The trail is steady but manageable, allowing your body to adjust gradually as you hike through the shaded forest. Porters carry your equipment while the crew ensures everything runs smoothly.
After approximately 6–7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m). Dinner and overnight stay will be at the campsite.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes more sparse, and the landscape opens up with impressive views of the mountain.
The trail follows a rocky ridge, offering your first clear views of Kilimanjaro’s Western Breach. A lunch stop is made along the way before continuing the ascent.
You will reach Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) in the afternoon, where you will relax, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
This is an important acclimatization day. You will hike toward Lava Tower (4,600m), gaining altitude through a semi-desert and rocky landscape. The views of Shira Plateau and surrounding ridges are spectacular.
After spending some time at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic camps on the mountain, surrounded by towering cliffs and unique vegetation. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but manageable ascent that offers incredible views at the top. It is one of the most exciting sections of the route.
After the climb, the trail continues through ridges and valleys with a mix of ascents and descents. The scenery remains dramatic, with views of glaciers and rugged terrain.
You will arrive at Karanga Camp after a few hours of trekking. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp, allowing time for rest and acclimatization.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, you will continue trekking through a dry and rocky alpine desert landscape. The trail steadily climbs toward Barafu Camp, the base for the summit attempt.
The route forms part of the Southern Circuit, offering stunning views of the summit from different angles. Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are clearly visible from this point.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit climb.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins just after midnight, climbing through cold and dark conditions toward Stella Point. The ascent is challenging but rewarding.
Reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise is the highlight of the trek, offering unforgettable views across the landscape. After celebrating, you will begin your descent.
You will return to Barafu Camp for lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, you will descend through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail is easier as you lose altitude and return to greener surroundings.
The walk is scenic and relaxing, with chances to spot birds and enjoy the forest environment. Conditions may be wet or muddy at lower elevations.
At Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer back to Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro climb.
