Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, where registration is completed before starting the hike. The trail leads through dense rainforest, offering a cool and shaded environment filled with rich vegetation and occasional wildlife sightings.
As you ascend, you may spot colobus monkeys and towering eucalyptus trees, adding to the natural beauty of the trek. A short optional hike to Maundi Crater provides scenic views across northern Tanzania and Kenya.
Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Continue your journey as the landscape transitions from rainforest to open moorland. The vegetation changes significantly, with giant lobelias and groundsels becoming more prominent as altitude increases.
The trail offers expansive views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, creating a dramatic backdrop throughout the hike. This section is longer and requires steady pacing as you gain elevation.
Arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, begin your descent through moorland and back into the rainforest. The trail becomes greener and more sheltered as you lose altitude, making for a more relaxed and comfortable hike.
The descent allows you to reflect on the journey while enjoying the changing scenery and fresh mountain air. Conditions may be muddy at lower elevations, so proper gear is recommended.
Arrive at Marangu Gate, where your trek concludes, followed by a transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
