When choosing accommodation, you should keep an appropriate budget in mind – the price of accommodation during a safari can range from as little as $80 per person per night to more than $1,500, while keeping in mind that these amounts do not include park fees. When planning a Tanzania safari tour, it is worth having an approximate budget that is slightly higher than the amount allocated for your selected destinations, which is completely reasonable. In addition, when it comes to the tour routes, before making the final decision regarding accommodation, make sure that you have chosen it based on your interests and the duration of your trip. With such an excellent plan, you will always be able to make any necessary changes during the safari without exposing yourself to inconvenience or discomfort. Most lodges provide electricity throughout the night and usually offer other amenities such as running water, laundry services, Wi-Fi (sometimes available only at the reception), hairdryers (available upon request), and storage lockers. Among safari lodges, you can find both mid-range and luxury properties.
Luxury lodges offer four-poster beds, balconies surrounding the entire room with breathtaking views, elegant bathrooms, spacious rooms, and in some cases private swimming pools, air conditioning, and much more. On the other hand, mid-range properties generally have smaller rooms, smaller balconies, and offer other basic services.
Tented Lodges
Tented lodges aim to combine the best of both worlds, providing most of the comforts typical of lodges while also allowing you to enjoy nature through their canvas walls. These lodges have wooden, and sometimes concrete, floors raised on stilts, with thatched roofs, while the walls are made of canvas with huge mesh windows. They are permanent structures, and most tented lodges have swimming pools.
If you are looking for a more authentic and immersive safari experience, then a tented lodge is the ideal choice for you. It offers both a high level of comfort and luxury. It is the perfect place to admire the views of the vast savannah and experience the sounds and sights of wildlife right outside your tent. Perhaps you are also looking for a different type of accommodation than what you are accustomed to at home – in that case, this will be the ideal place for you, as tented lodges provide very different experiences compared with what you have at home.
Tented Camps
Another option is tented camps, which should not be confused with basic campsites. These are by far the most popular type of accommodation that can be found within national parks.
These are very peaceful walk-in tents, made entirely of canvas and about the size of an average hotel room, and sometimes even larger, with a private bathroom equipped with a bucket shower or running water, a long-drop toilet or even a flushing toilet, and sturdy beds with thick mattresses. Chairs and a table are also provided, allowing you to sit outside the tent if you want to spend some time by yourself.
Some tented camps, especially those located in central Serengeti and Tarangire, are usually permanent and remain in the same location throughout the year. However, some tented camps are mobile and change location depending on the expected direction of the migration – from December to March they move from the southern part of Serengeti/Ndutu, and from June to October – to the northern part of Serengeti. Tented camps are usually powered by solar energy, with a diesel generator serving as a backup or additional source of power. Most tented camps therefore switch off electricity at night between 10:00 p.m. and around 5:00 a.m. In addition, it may not be possible to charge devices inside the tent, and you will need to use the charging sockets in the camp’s common area. Generally, however, devices can be charged directly inside the safari vehicle. These camps usually do not have Wi-Fi access, although some may offer Wi-Fi in the common area.
Budget or Basic Camping
Basic camping is mainly intended for travellers who want to go on an exploratory safari and have a limited budget. It usually involves pitching a tent at a campsite and sleeping in a sleeping bag on a foam mattress laid on the ground – this is the simplest form of accommodation you can choose. Basic facilities are shared and include toilets and showers, and sometimes a communal cooking area. Upon arrival at your allocated site, you will receive camping equipment and a cook, in addition to the standard vehicle and guide that you use throughout all your safaris. The camping equipment provided includes a tent, folding chair and table, foam mattress, and sleeping bag. Since the facilities are limited, guests are prepared in advance for the situation they are likely to encounter. Most campsites are usually located inside the park, but in some locations, such as Manyara, campsites outside the park are more commonly used. They are generally intended for people who prefer to stay outside the camp.
City Hotels/Resort Lodges
All of the above accommodation options can be found in and around Tanzania’s national parks. However, you may choose to spend several nights in cities, depending on what you want to include in your itinerary. In towns and cities located near the parks, such as Arusha and Karatu, you will find several hotels and guesthouses.
Keep in mind that affordable city hotels are often the cheapest of all the accommodation types mentioned above; they are considered even cheaper than the basic camping option. Sometimes they are located in convenient locations that can make travelling from one place to another much easier. For example, hotels in Karatu are conveniently located on the route between Tarangire and Ngorongoro/Serengeti, allowing you to stay overnight while travelling. At the same time, they can be a suitable place to stay overnight between Manyara and Ngorongoro/Serengeti.
