3-Day Mt Kenya to the Peak — Sirimon Route

Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak and Kenya’s highest mountain, stands at 5,199 meters (17,057 feet). This ancient stratovolcano holds immense cultural and geological significance. Known as “Kirinyaga” or “God’s resting place” by the Kikuyu people, the mountain features diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforests to alpine meadows. This 3-day trek via the Sirimon Route offers an unforgettable journey through these varied landscapes, culminating in the climb to the summit of Point Lenana (4,985m), accessible to fit hikers.

Details Itinerary

Depart Nairobi at 7:00 AM and drive to Nanyuki for a brief breakfast and shopping stop. Continue to Sirimon Gate (2,650m), the trek starting point. Hike approximately 9 km (2–3 hours) uphill to Old Moses Camp (3,300m), passing through four distinct vegetation zones: tropical rainforest, bamboo forest, rosewood, and heather. Keep an eye out for unique wildlife, including the rare Mt Kenya chameleon. Overnight at Old Moses Mountain Camp.

After breakfast, begin the hike at 7:00 AM through the alpine moorland zone. Today’s trek takes 5–7 hours depending on fitness, with a picnic lunch en route. Arrive at Shipton’s Camp (4,200m) in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Accommodation: Shipton’s Hut

Start early at 3:00 AM for the summit push to Point Lenana (4,985m) to maximize your chances of reaching the peak and enjoying clear panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see Mount Kilimanjaro towering over 340 km away. After descending back to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast, continue down to Old Moses Camp, then drive back to Nairobi with a stop in Nanyuki.
