5-Day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Amboseli Private Lodge Safari

Highlights

When planning the perfect safari, families often look for the right balance: thrilling wildlife adventures for the children, cultural experiences for everyone, and comfort in accommodations that provide safety, space, and relaxation. This 5-day private lodge safari is one of the most rewarding Family Tours in Kenya, combining three of the country’s most iconic destinations — the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli.

This carefully curated itinerary ensures that families can enjoy the magic of Kenya at a comfortable pace. Game drives are private, meaning your family sets the rhythm of the journey, whether that’s longer wildlife excursions for adventurous teens or shorter, flexible drives for younger children. At night, you’ll retreat to family-friendly lodges with modern amenities, hearty meals, and warm hospitality.

The adventure begins in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s safari crown jewel. The Mara is the stage for the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebras cross its crocodile-infested rivers between July and October. Even outside migration season, it’s home to the famous Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — as well as cheetahs, giraffes, and hippos. For families, this is a chance to see wildlife documentaries come alive in real time.

From the Mara, you’ll head to Lake Nakuru National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its rhino sanctuary and birdlife. With over 350 bird species recorded, it’s a paradise for young explorers curious about flamingos, pelicans, and storks. The park also provides excellent chances to spot giraffes, zebras, and leopards against the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley escarpments.

The journey ends in Amboseli National Park, nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Few experiences can rival watching herds of elephants with Africa’s tallest mountain as the backdrop. Amboseli is an intimate, open park, making wildlife easier to spot — perfect for children and first-time safari-goers. Families often love the scenic picnic lunch on Observation Hill, which offers panoramic views across the park’s plains and swamps.

Throughout the safari, you’ll stay at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge, Sarova Woodlands Hotel & Spa, and Amboseli Sopa Lodge — each selected for comfort, family-friendly service, and proximity to wildlife. Professional driver-guides will bring the parks to life with fascinating stories, making the experience both fun and educational for children.

This safari is more than just a holiday. It’s a bonding experience for the whole family, a chance to marvel at Africa’s wonders together, and a memory that will last for generations. For families seeking an adventure that’s safe, enriching, and unforgettable, this Family Tour is the perfect choice.

Details Itinerary

Your adventure begins at 8:30 am with a pickup from your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Driving south, the journey takes you across the Great Rift Valley. Stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint for breathtaking photos, where your guide will explain the geological wonder of this vast landscape.

By lunchtime, you’ll arrive at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge, a family-friendly retreat nestled just outside the Masai Mara. After a hearty meal and a short rest, set out on your first afternoon game drive in the Mara. Children will delight in spotting zebras, elephants, and giraffes, while adults marvel at the sheer beauty of the grasslands dotted with acacia trees.

As the sun begins to set, the savannah glows golden, providing the perfect backdrop for your family’s first safari photos. Return to the lodge for dinner and settle in for the night, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature.

Accommodation: Jambo Mara Safari Lodge

After breakfast, pack a picnic lunch and head out for a full-day safari adventure. The Masai Mara is one of the best places on Earth to see big cats. Lions are abundant here, often spotted lounging with their cubs or stalking prey. Leopards rest high in trees, while cheetahs race across the plains.

Your guide will take you to the Mara River, a highlight of the reserve. Here, crocodiles and hippos thrive, and during the migration season, this is where wildebeest and zebras risk everything to cross the waters. Even outside migration, the river teems with life and makes for a perfect picnic spot.

In the afternoon, continue exploring the park’s rich habitats. Optional: Visit a Maasai village to experience traditional culture, dances, and crafts — an interactive experience children especially enjoy.

Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, bid farewell to the Mara and begin your drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Arrive in the afternoon and head directly into the park for a game drive.

Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingos, which at times paint the lake pink. It’s also one of the best places to see both black and white rhinos. Keep your eyes open for Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, and elusive leopards. Children will love learning about the park’s 350+ bird species, from pelicans to herons.

Later, check into Sarova Woodlands Hotel & Spa, where families can enjoy modern comfort, delicious meals, and a restful night.

After breakfast, depart on a scenic drive to Amboseli National Park, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, you may stop at a Maasai village, where your family can interact with locals and learn about their traditions.

Arrive at Amboseli Sopa Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy your first Amboseli game drive, where elephants roam in large herds across the plains. With Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak as the backdrop, this is one of the most iconic safari landscapes in the world.

Return to the lodge for dinner, storytelling around the fire, and overnight stay.

Accommodation: Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Rise early for a morning game drive. This is one of the best times to see predators, as lions and hyenas are often active before the heat sets in. Visit Observation Hill, a unique picnic spot offering panoramic views of Amboseli’s plains, swamps, and Mount Kilimanjaro.

After lunch, begin your journey back to Nairobi, arriving by evening. You’ll be dropped at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your Family Tour safari — five days of unforgettable adventures, wildlife, and family bonding.
