6-Day Kilimanjaro Trek – Marangu Route

Highlights

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain and the world’s highest free-standing peak. Located in northeastern Tanzania, this majestic giant consists of three volcanic cones: Shira, Mawenzi, and the summit peak, Kibo. The Marangu Route is the most popular and accessible path to the summit — often called the “Coca-Cola Route” — and it’s the only route where climbers sleep in huts instead of tents. No technical climbing skills are required.

Details Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for your Tanzania safari packages. You’ll meet your trekking team and receive a full briefing and equipment check.
Overnight at: Lindrin Lodge (or similar)

After breakfast, you’ll drive to Marangu Gate (1,860m) where the Tanzania safari trek begins. Hike through lush montane rainforest, keeping an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and exotic birds. After 3–4 hours, arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m). You can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views.
Overnight at: Mandara Hut

Leaving the rainforest, the trail climbs into moorland. Enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The hike takes about 5–6 hours, ending at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you’ll rest and acclimatize.
Overnight at: Horombo Hut

Today’s hike continues past the last water point and crosses the lunar-like alpine desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. After 6–7 hours, you’ll reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit push.
Overnight at: Kibo Hut

Start your summit attempt just after midnight. Hike steep scree slopes under starlight to Gilman’s Point (5,861m), then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the top, descend to Kibo Hut for a short break and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest. This is the longest and most challenging day of the trek.
Overnight at: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, begin your descent through moorland and rainforest, passing Mandara Hut on your way to Marangu Gate (1,860m). You’ll be met at the gate and transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for the night or your onward journey.
End of the Tanzania safari trek.
