6-Day Marangu Route Adventure Climb

Highlights

The 6-day Marangu Route is the shortest and one of the most comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the “Coca-Cola route,” it is the only route that offers accommodation in mountain huts with beds, solar lighting, and shared dining areas. This makes it an excellent choice for climbers who prefer more comfort compared to camping routes.

The trail passes through beautiful landscapes, starting in dense rainforest, then opening into moorland and alpine desert as you gain altitude. Along the way, you may encounter wildlife such as colobus and blue monkeys, while enjoying views of Kilimanjaro’s iconic peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi. The route is straightforward and well-defined, making it popular for both beginners and experienced trekkers.

With an added acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, this itinerary improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The journey combines gradual ascent, scenic diversity, and the support of experienced guides, ensuring a safe and rewarding Kilimanjaro climbing experience.

Details Itinerary

Your climb begins with a transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where registration is completed. The trek starts through a lush tropical rainforest filled with rich vegetation and wildlife, including colobus monkeys and various bird species. The trail is gentle and enjoyable, making it a great introduction to the climb.

After a few hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, a cluster of A-frame huts set in a forest clearing. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the hut.

After breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail gradually opens up, offering wide views and your first glimpses of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The terrain becomes more rugged as you continue ascending.

After 6–8 hours of trekking, you will reach Horombo Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

This day is set aside for acclimatization to improve your chances of reaching the summit. After breakfast, you will take a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge, gaining altitude while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and landscapes.

After the hike, you will return to Horombo Hut for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.

Today’s trek takes you across the alpine desert known as the “Saddle,” a vast and dry landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain becomes more barren, and the air thinner as you approach higher altitudes.

After 6–8 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Your summit attempt begins at midnight, trekking through the dark and cold conditions toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Reaching the summit at sunrise is the highlight of the climb, offering incredible views above the clouds.

After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight rest.

On the final day, you will descend through the moorland and back into the rainforest. The trek is longer but easier as you head downhill toward Marangu Gate.

Upon arrival, you will receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer back to Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
