Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your journey begins with a transfer to Lemosho Gate, where registration formalities are completed before starting the trek. The trail leads through a dense rainforest, rich with towering trees, birds, and wildlife such as monkeys. This peaceful environment makes for a gentle and enjoyable start to the climb.
The path gradually ascends through the forest, allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude. Along the way, you will experience the natural beauty of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, with fresh air and shaded trails making the hike comfortable.
After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), where your tents will be set up. You will enjoy a warm meal and settle in for your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, the trail continues through thinning forest before opening up onto the vast Shira Plateau. The landscape changes dramatically, offering wide views of the mountain and surrounding plains. The climb becomes steadier as you gain altitude.
You will pass Shira Ridge and stop for lunch at Shira Camp 1 before continuing onward. The terrain becomes more open, with unique vegetation such as giant senecias adding to the surreal scenery.
After a long but rewarding day, you will reach Shira 2 Camp, where you can relax and enjoy stunning sunset views of the summit. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. You will hike toward Lava Tower (4,640m), gaining significant altitude as the environment shifts into a rocky alpine desert. The steady climb helps your body adjust to the higher elevation.
After reaching Lava Tower, you will descend into the Barranco Valley, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This descent is important for acclimatization and prepares you for the days ahead.
You will arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on the mountain, surrounded by giant groundsels and dramatic cliffs. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but manageable ascent that offers incredible views from the top. Though challenging at first, it becomes an enjoyable and rewarding section of the trek.
After reaching the top, the trail continues along ridges and valleys, providing stunning views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. The terrain is varied, with short ascents and descents along the way.
You will arrive at Karanga Camp after a few hours of trekking. The shorter distance allows time for rest and acclimatization before the summit approach. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, you will continue trekking through a dry and rocky alpine desert landscape. The trail steadily ascends, with fewer signs of vegetation as you approach higher altitudes.
The hike is relatively short but important, as it leads to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. The views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding terrain are spectacular.
Upon arrival, you will rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the summit climb. You will go to sleep early before waking around midnight for the ascent.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Your summit attempt begins just after midnight, trekking through cold and dark conditions toward Stella Point and eventually Uhuru Peak. The climb is demanding, but reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment.
At Uhuru Peak (5,895m), you will celebrate your achievement and take in the breathtaking views. After a short stay, you will begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments.
You will then continue descending to Mweka Camp, passing through changing landscapes as you lose altitude. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, you will begin your final descent through the lush rainforest. The trail is gentle and scenic, offering a relaxing end to your trekking adventure.
As you walk through the forest, you may spot birds and small wildlife, enjoying the fresh air and lower altitude. The journey becomes easier as you approach the gate.
At Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificate and meet your driver for transfer back to Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro climb.
