7-Day Machame Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Climb

Highlights

The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a perfect balance between adventure and acclimatization. Starting from the southwestern side of the mountain, this route takes you through diverse ecological zones, beginning with lush rainforest and gradually transitioning into moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone. Each section of the trek reveals unique landscapes, making it one of the most visually impressive routes on the mountain.

This itinerary is carefully designed to maximize summit success by allowing gradual altitude gain and proper acclimatization. Highlights include trekking across the Shira Plateau, passing the Lava Tower for altitude adjustment, and conquering the iconic Barranco Wall. The route provides both physical challenge and incredible scenery, ensuring trekkers enjoy every stage of the climb while preparing for the final ascent.

The journey reaches its peak at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, where climbers are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds. After the summit, the descent follows the Mweka route, offering a smooth and scenic return through different vegetation zones. This 7-day Machame Route delivers a complete Kilimanjaro experience, combining endurance, natural beauty, and unforgettable achievement.

Details Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Moshi town (800m) to Machame Gate (1,800m), where registration formalities are completed. From here, the trek starts through the dense rainforest, a rich ecosystem filled with towering trees, birds, and occasional wildlife sightings. The trail gradually ascends, offering a steady introduction to the climb while allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude.

After approximately 5–6 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m). A picnic lunch is enjoyed along the way, followed by dinner and overnight camping at the camp. This first day sets the tone for the journey, combining moderate effort with stunning natural surroundings.
Distance: 10.75 km | Altitude Gain: 1,200m

After breakfast, the trek continues out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone, where vegetation becomes more sparse and views begin to open up. The landscape changes dramatically, offering panoramic scenery and clear views of the mountain. The trail is shorter but steeper in sections, helping your body continue adapting to higher elevations.

After 4–5 hours of trekking, you will reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), located on an open plateau ideal for photography and relaxation. The campsite provides spectacular views, especially at sunset. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Distance: 5.3 km | Altitude Gain: 850m

This is an important acclimatization day. After breakfast, you will trek toward Lava Tower (4,600m), gaining significant altitude before descending again. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to thinner air and prepares you for higher elevations ahead.

After spending time at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,940m), located in a scenic valley surrounded by giant groundsels. The trek takes about 6–7 hours and offers incredible views along the way. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Distance: 10.75 km | Altitude Gain: 750m | Altitude Loss: 660m

The day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable ascent that rewards you with breathtaking views. Once at the top, the trail continues through rolling terrain toward Karanga Valley, offering a mix of short climbs and descents.

After 3–4 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Karanga Camp (4,000m). This is the shortest trekking day, allowing extra time for rest and acclimatization. You may take short walks around the camp to aid adaptation. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Distance: 4.25 km | Altitude Gain: 60m

Following breakfast, you will hike through alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp (4,600m), the base camp for the summit attempt. The environment becomes harsher and more rugged, with fewer signs of vegetation as you approach higher altitudes.

After 3–4 hours of trekking, you will arrive at camp for lunch, followed by rest and preparation for the summit climb. An early dinner is served before you get some sleep. Around midnight, you will wake up for hot drinks and begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Distance: 4.25 km | Altitude Gain: 600m

The summit push begins at midnight, climbing steadily through the darkness toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m). This challenging ascent takes about 6–7 hours, but reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable reward.

After celebrating at the peak, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). The descent is long but offers relief as you return to lower altitudes. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.
Distance: 11.5 km | Altitude Loss: 2,795m

After breakfast, the final descent takes you through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,800m). This 3–4 hour walk marks the end of your trekking journey, with the trail becoming easier as you descend.

At the gate, you will receive your summit certificate if successful, meet your transfer vehicle, and return to Moshi town for a well-deserved shower, lunch, and relaxation. This concludes your Kilimanjaro adventure.
