Best Months to go to Tanzania for Safari
The best month for you to visit Tanzania for a Safari is subject to what you are looking for and priorities. We have the dry season which runs between June-October which offers an ideal time for game viewing as there are abundant wildlife and the Great Migration River crossing. There is the low season which runs from January to March it’s the best time to seeing baby animals and the prices is insanely low. For a combination of good weather and fewer crowds consider the short rainy season which is between November and December.
Dry Season (June-October)
During this season expect cool and dry weather and minimal rain. This is usually the peak season where you expect higher prices and bigger crowds that is in June, July and August. This time is best for wildlife viewing since during this time the animals tend top congregate around water sources which makes it easier to spot game against the less-lush landscape. It is the best time to witness the Great migration especially when the Mara River crossing is at its peak in the northern Serengeti and typically happens between mid-July to October which is a good time for you to be already booked there if you do not want to miss the action. With everything seeming to fall in place as you would expect then know this is the peak whereby you expect the prices to be higher thus advanced booking is advisable.
Calving Season (January and February)
As the name suggest this season is best for witnessing the newborn wildebeest and zebras which play a significant role in attracting predators. The weather is usually warmer with chances of short rains however; it is still good for safaris as it does not hinder most of the field activities. Wildlife viewing during this season is very exciting as the abundant calves attract most predators to the southern part of Serengeti and Ndutu Plains. It is during the low season so expect the prices to be low in terms of charges.
Shoulder and Rainy Seasons (March to May)
This is the long rainy seasons which is usually associated with numerous challenges despite being beneficial to other travellers and tourists. April and May are usually the coldest months and very wet, they are not ideal for safari activities. However, they could be advantageous to photographers as the weather provides perfect scenes for dramatic skies. Additionally, at this time there are very few tourists so you can do most of your activities without facing any human distractions.
How Much Does Tanzania Luxury Safari Cost?
The average cost of a luxury safari tour in Tanzania costs between $600 to $2,000 per person per day. However, there are some high-end options that are costly than the said amount reaching prices of around $2,400 per person per day. Most of these costs and charges that visitors incur are subject to a number of factors such as time of the year, type of accommodation and transport. These are critical factors and might set a significant difference between one form of safari to another despite everything being on the luxury tier. For instance, you might be on a luxury safari with another traveller however, if you are using a ground transport and the other is using planes then this might bring in a very big different in terms of cost. The daily baseline expenditure per day per person in a luxury trip begins at $1,000 as the minimum. The lower-end luxury expenditure you expect to pay approximately $600 to $1,500 per day. There is the higher end luxury option which is where the prices begin to increase as the average cost here is between $1,500 to $2,000 this is the average expenditure per day during the peak season where you have prime locations and fly-in transfers. You can do the most exclusive option where you get the chance to be set on the most exclusive properties and feel the top-notch experience where the daily expense per person can be as a high as $4,200. This is a very expensive package of the luxury services that you can get while doing a luxury safari in Tanzania.

One of the greatest spectacles on earth is the Great Wildebeest Migration where you will get to witness over 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelles and zebras move across the Serengeti. You being in the park and experiencing the event is one of the very best reasons you should go on a safari in Tanzania. Well, we are not done with the best things to see in Tanzania because here comes the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” locally known as Ngorongoro Crater is home to one of the densest populations of the wildlife in Africa. You can start with a 12 day itinerary then a 14 day Kenya & Tanzania itinerary as a starting point. While these safari tours in Kenya are definitely not cheap, they are an incredible once in a lifetime experience.
How Long Should a Tanzania Safari Tour Take?
Based on the experiences you are looking for in Tanzania will determine how long you need to stay in Tanzania for a Safari. I would recommend pending at least 7-8 days there. This is a great amount of time that you can utilize to see a lot of highlights as Tanzania is such a large country whereby getting around it takes time.
A 7-8 days trip offers you ample time that you can use to visit a handful of national parks and get to have true experience of some of Tanzania’s top attractions. If you have ample time, of between 7 days to 4 weeks you have the opportunity to explore more of the country’s 22 national parks. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that for a day or two you cannot explore Tanzania, well it is very possible because there is a way that the country offers all budgets for travellers from low budgets to luxury budgets. You can do a mini safari version of the tour where you can get to visit the nearest destination to your arrival points Kilimanjaro and Arusha airports are close to certain parks such as Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha National Park, Lake Manyara and Tarangire. On the other hand, if you are flying to Dar es Salaam, you could visit Mikumi National Park which is a just a 4–6-hour drive away from a worthwhile short trip. Around these areas even within a day you get to see the Big 5 although rhinos are not available it is still a great safari experience. You might as well arrive at Mwanza Airport you can still visit Lake Victoria which is just a 20 minutes drive away, a perfect ride for a scenic and relaxing stop.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Tanzania?
There is no right answer to this question, why? You may ask. This is because the best time to travel anywhere depends on your time, budget, what you want to experience and interests. Once you answer this yourself, booking with us at Ravina Tours is easy. However their are a few details I can share to simplify for you this question.
- Dry Season: If you are travelling in the dry season from June to October and December to February, this months offer a pleasant weather and are great for game drives and wildlife viewing. Their is however a downside to travelling in this time since the hotel rates are very high, this months are considered peak season and you will expect large number of tourists in most places you visit.
- Mid Season: This is in the month of June to October and December to February. In mid season, the country experiences low rains but also is flexible by offering tourists a great time to explore Tanzania. You will enjoy moderate hotel rates and a bit of privacy because few tourists travel during this time of the month.
- Wet Season: Wet season is best for budget travellers and is best in the month of April and May. The wet season is the only season that has the lowest hotel rates and places such as the parks and beaches are less crowded. The biggest pro for travelling in this season is privacy. The con is that you might be limited to travel and enjoy most activities because of the heavy rains.

Which accommodation options are there in Tanzania?
As much as Ravina Tours focuses on safari and wildlife, we know that choosing the right place to stay and relax is important as accommodation is a key element in creating an unforgettable experience. Ravina would recommend you to consider the following parameters when selecting accommodation for each night during your safari.
When choosing an accommodation bear in mind the right budget an accommodation during a safari can cost as little as $80 per person per night to over $1500 and remember this does not include parking fees. While planning for a Tanzania safari tour it would be better if you operate with a rough budget that is a little bit higher than what you have on the selected destinations which is very okay. Also, for itineraries make sure you selected them based on your interests and duration of tour prior to making a conclusion on the accommodation choices. With such a brilliant plan you can always alter any changes that you need to do during the safari without facing any inconveniences or discomfort. In terms of locations if you have a choice in accommodation selection, priorities the location of accommodation, over the type of accommodation. By staying at camps/lodges in good location, you can maximise your time in the parks for wildlife viewing.
Well in terms of accommodations there are several types of accommodations available on a Tanzania safari tour, ranging from budget-friendly basic camping to mid tier and luxury lodges, tented camps, tented lodges. Each type of accommodation offers a unique experience, and choosing the right one depends on your budget, interests, itinerary, and preferred level of comfort.
Lodges
Safari lodges are usually made of concrete often located inside or outside the national park. They might contain elements such as wood, stone or thatch which matches the natural surroundings. Additionally, they usually have multiple quarters spread out across a huge area with a main common building somewhere in between. This common area will have a reception, lounge, restaurant, bar, and sometimes gym, spa services and shops. Many of these lodges also have a swimming pool in the main block where you can relax after a game drive.
Most of the lodges are able to provide electricity through the night, and generally have other amenities like running water, laundry service, Wi-Fi which is sometimes restricted to reception, hair dryers which are provided upon request, locker facility among others. Among safari lodges, you will find mid tier to luxury lodges.
While the luxury ones have four poster beds, wraparound balconies with stunning views, pretty bathrooms, spacious rooms, and in some cases secluded plunge pools, air conditioning and much more. On the other hand, mid range lodges tend to have smaller rooms, smaller balconies with other basic services.
Tented Lodges
Tented lodges try to combine the best of both worlds, by providing you with most of the comforts of lodges while still trying to ensure that you enjoy nature through their canvas walls. These lodges have wooden and sometimes concrete floors that are raised on stilts with thatched roof while the walls are made of canvas with huge net windows in them. These are permanent structures and most tented lodges have swimming pools.
If you are in need of a more authentic and immersive safari experience then a tented lodge is the right option for you. This is because it offers both a high levels of comfort and luxury. This is the perfect place for you to enjoy the views of vast savannah and experience the sounds and the sights of wildlife right outside your tent. You might also be looking to find a different form of accommodation other than the ones that you find at home then this would be the perfect place for you to be as the tented lodges provide a very diverse for of experience compared to what you have at home,
Tented Camps
The other option is tented camps which should not to be confused with basic camps. These are by far the most popular kind of accommodation that you can find inside national parks. These are very calm walk-in tents style, that are made fully out of canvas and are of the size of an average hotel room or sometimes even larger with private ensuite bathrooms using pail or running showers, long-drop or even flush toilets, solid beds with thick mattresses. You will also have chairs and a table so that you can sit outside your tent if you wish to have some of the time that you want alone.
There are some tented camps especially those located in Central Serengeti, Tarangire that usually are permanent and remain at same location throughout the year. However, some tented camps are mobile and change location based on expected migration location from the southern Serengeti/Ndutu from December to March to the northern Serengeti from June to October. The purpose of these tented camps being mobile
Tented camps are usually solar powered with diesel generator for backup or to supply additional power. So most tented camps switch off electricity in the night between 10:00 PM to morning 5:00 AM or so. Also, you might not be able to charge your devices in your tent and will have to use charging ports in the common area of camp. In general, you can just charge your devices in the safari vehicle itself though. You will not have access to Wi-Fi in these camps mostly but some might have wi-fi in the common area.
Budget or Basic Camping
The basic camping is mostly for tourists who wish to have an exploratory safari and are on a budget. It typically involves setting up a tent in the campsite and sleeping in a sleeping bag on a foam mattress laid on ground this is the easiest form of accommodation that you can have. Basic amenities have to be shared which include toilets and showers sometimes they tend to share the same common cooking place. Once you are in your assigned areas you will be allocated camping gear, and a cook in addition to the usual vehicle and guide you get on all safaris. The provided camping gear includes tent, a folding chair and table, foam mattress and sleeping bag. Since the amenities are limited, guests are prepared in advance to be aware of the situation they are likely to face. Most of the camp sites are usually located inside the park but at some locations at Manyara for example campsites outside the park are more commonly used. These are usually there to offer extra accommodations to individuals that mostly interested in staying outside the camp.
City Hotels/Lodges
All the above accommodation options can be found in and around the national parks in Tanzania. However, you might decide to stay in cities for some nights based on what you want in your itineraries. You will find several hotels/lodges in towns and cities close to the parks such as Arusha City and Karatu Town.
Remember that budget city hotels are often the cheapest among all the types of accommodations listed above, they are considered cheaper than the basic camping option. At times they are located in convenient locations that might be very easy for you to move from one place to another. For instance, Karatu hotels are suitably located along the way for a night between Tarangire and Ngorongoro/Serengeti. At the same time, it might be suitable for the night between Manyara and Ngorongoro/Serengeti.
