Previously I had visited the Maasai Mara but this time I wasn’t interested in staying somewhere that felt too formal or removed from the wilderness. I wanted a place where I could wake up to the sounds of nature, spend my days exploring the Mara and return somewhere peaceful in the evening. That is what drew me to Richards River Camp.
The journey into the Mara already had me excited. The familiar city scenery had disappeared replaced by open grasslands, scattered trees, wildlife and the unmistakable feeling that I was getting deeper into Kenya’s wilderness. When I finally arrived at the camp, I immediately appreciated its setting. The natural surrounding gave the place an authentic safari character and I liked that I could hear the river and the sounds of the bush rather than the normal traffic and city noise.
For me, Richards River Camp wasn’t about trying to create a five star city hotel in the middle of the wilderness. The attraction was being surrounded by nature and having the opportunity to experience the Maasai Mara at a slower and more personal pace.
My Tent Made the Wilderness Feel Much Closer
Staying at the tent was one of the things that I was most excited about. There is something diffrent about sleeping under canvas when you are surrounded by African bush. My tent was comfortable enough to relax in after a long day but it still retained that adventurous safari feeling I had hoped for. I enjoyed stepping outsidein the morning and being immediately reminded that I was in the Mara.
The mornings were particularly memorable I would wake up early listne to the sounds around the camp and get ready for the day’s sightings and simply enjoy having no where else neede to be. That combination of comfort and wilderness was exactly what I was looking for my stay.
My Game Drives wrere full of Unexpected Moments
Of course the main reason was I travelled to the Maasai Mara was wildlife and Richards River Camp provided a great base for exploring the ecosystem. Every game drive felt different. I never knew what Iwas going to encounter once w were headed into the plains. One moment we could be watching a hers of elephants moving through the grass and the next we would be following up on a group of zebras or searching the trees for a leopard.
I particularlyl enjoyed the unpredicatablility of the game drives. Safari is not like visitng a zoo where you know exactly where each animal will be. You have to be patient and observant sometimes the most memorable sightings happen when you least expect them. I remember spending time watching lions restng in the grass, giraffes moving gracefully across the landscape and large herds of herbivores grazing peacefully.
The Mara’s scenery was just as impressive as its wildlife. There were moments whne I simply asked the driver to stop spo I could take in the landscape without worrying about taking photographs. And to be honest those were somemof my favourite moments.
The River Gave the Camp Its Own Special Atmosphere
What stood out to me about Richards River Camp was its connection to the river. The sound of flowing water created a completely different atmosphere from the many safari camps I’ve visisted. I enjoyed spending quiet moments around the camp listening to the river and watching birds moving through the surrounding vegetation.
After a game drive it was refreshing to return and have some down time rather than immediately thinking about the next activity. One evening I sat outside for quite a while simply enjoying the surroundings. The light was fading, birds were becoming quieter and the whole camp seemed to settle into the evening. It was one of those moments where I didn’t feel the need to do anything. I just sat there and appreciated where I was.
Would I Return to Richards River Camp?
Looking back at my stay, Richards River Camp gave me the Kind of safari Experience that I had been looking for. It allowed me to enjoy the Maasai Mara without losing that feeling of being immersed in the wilderness. I particularly enjoyed the natural setting, tented accommodation, paceful atmosphere and easy access to the incredible wildlife experiences that makes the Mara so famous.
For travellers loooking for an authnentic Maasai Mara Safari experience, I would certainly comsider Richards River Camp. It can appeal tovisitors who value nature, wildlife, tranquility and a more intimate style of safari accommodation.
What I remember most is not simply the camp itself. I remember waking up to the sounds of the bush, heading out beefore sunrise, watching wildlife move through the Mara, returning tired but excited and ending the day beside the river. There was something wonderfully uncomplicated about the experience.
By the time I left, I felt that I had experiened the Maasai Mara rataher than just having visited it. And for me thats what makes a perfect safari memeorable. The feeling that evn if it was only for a few days but you have become part of the wilderness.
