Planning a family safari sounds exciting until you actually have to find somewhere that works or everyone. The children wanted to see as many animals as possible we wanted somewhere peaceful and all of us agreed that we didn’t want the trip to feel like one long schedule of activities. That is what made our stay at Tilipikwani Mara so enjoyable.
We traveled as a family to the Maasai Mara and from the beginning the experience felt different from some of our previous holiday. The journey into the Mara gave us our first taste of the adventure. the landscape gradually change from familiar roads to open grasslands, acacia trees, rocky trenches and wildlife appearing in the distance.
The children became increasingly excited with every animal we spotted along the way. Before we had even reached the camp that safari had already begun. When we eventually arrived at Tilipikwani Mara we were welcomed into a peaceful riverside setting overlooking the Talek River. The camp’s location made it feel wonderfully removed from everyday life while giving us a comfortable place to return to after our adventures.

After the excitement of arriving we settled into our accommodation and gave everyone a little time to relax. Traveling with children means comfort matters especially after several hours on the road along game drive. We appreciated having a peaceful space where we could unpack, freshen up and recharge before the next activity.
The surroundings were as enjoyable as the accommodation itself. Instead of feeling separated from nature we remained aware that we were staying in the middle of the Mara ecosystem. The sounds of birds and the river nearby made even the quiet moments feel like part of the safari.
The children particularly enjoyed being outdoors. They were constantly looking around for birds, monkeys, insects and anything else that moved around. At one point we had to remind them that not every bird needed to be photographed. Those little moments made the trip feel less like a conventional family holiday and more like an adventure we were all discovering together.
The Game Drives Turned Into Family Storytelling Sessions
The game drives quickly became everyone’s favorite part of the trip. Each morning brought a new sense of anticipation. The children would ask what animals we might see while we adults were just secretly excited. Once we entered the Mar, the questions started almost immediately. “Is that a lion?”, “how many zebras are there?” “why is that giraffe standing alone?” It was impossible not to laugh all day.
We encountered some of the Mara’s famous wildlife including elephants, zebras, buffalo, antelopes and predators. Every sighting seemed to create another family conversation One of the things I appreciated the most was watching children become genuinely interested in wildlife rather than just simply seeing the animals as something to photograph. They began noticing behavior, asking questions and learn why different animals live where they do.
It was a safari that was mixed with educational experience without feeling like you are in a classroom. For us the game drives we weren’t simply excursions. They became shared experiences everyone could talk about later.
The Riverside Setting Gave Us Time to Simply Be Together
After spending several hours on safari, we sometimes didn’t feel like doing anything complicated. We would return to camp, have something to eat and spend time relaxing together. The Talek River added a lovely backdrop to those slower parts of our day. Sitting around and listening to the water while the children talked about their favorite wildlife sightings gave us the opportunity to appreciate trip without constantly moving from one activity to another.
Evenings were very enjoyable. Once the day’s excitement had settled we would sit together and talk about everything we had seen. The children would often argue over which animal had been the most impressive while we parents had our own favorites.
Dinner became another family gathering rather than simply a meal. Someone would inevitably bring up something funny that happened during the game drive and before long everyone would be laughing again.
Those were the moments I came to appreciate most. The nig wildlife sightings were incredible but it was the time we spent together afterwards that gave the trip its emotional value.

As our stay came to an end, we all had the same reaction, nobody wanted to leave. The children had become attached to the excitement of waking up knowing another game drive was awaiting. While adults had enjoyed having a chance to slow down and spend uninterrupted time with family.
