Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi – Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Day 2: Full-Day Wildlife Experience in the Masai Mara
  • Day 3: Masai Mara – Nairobi

Day 1

Nairobi – Masai Mara National Reserve

Your 3-day Masai Mara safari begins with collection from your Nairobi hotel or the airport, depending on your arrival arrangements. A representative from Shanjoy Tours will transfer you to Wilson Airport for your scheduled flight to the Masai Mara.

The flight offers a convenient alternative to the long road journey and provides an opportunity to appreciate Kenya’s changing landscapes from the air. Upon arrival at the Mara airstrip, you will be met by your safari guide and begin the transfer toward Basecamp Masai Mara. Depending on the timing of your flight and wildlife activity, the transfer may include an introductory game drive. You will arrive at the camp for check-in and lunch. After some time to settle in and relax, you will head out for your first dedicated afternoon game drive in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

The reserve is renowned for its expansive savannah landscapes and diverse wildlife. During the afternoon drive, your guide will help you look for animals such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, and cheetahs. Birdwatchers may also encounter a variety of resident and migratory bird species. Your guide’s local knowledge is particularly valuable when interpreting animal behavior, identifying tracks and signs, and choosing suitable viewing areas while observing park regulations and maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife. As the afternoon comes to an end, you will return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 2

Full-Day Wildlife Experience in the Masai Mara

Day two is dedicated to exploring the Masai Mara and provides the most substantial opportunity for wildlife viewing during your safari.

After breakfast, you can undertake either a full-day game drive with a packed lunch or, depending on the camp and safari arrangements, enjoy separate morning and afternoon game drives with a return to camp for lunch. Your exact schedule can be confirmed with the safari operator according to your preferred pace and accommodation arrangements.

During the game drives, you will explore the reserve’s open grasslands and other habitats in search of wildlife. The Masai Mara is particularly well known for populations of lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and cheetahs. Leopards and rhinoceros may also be encountered, although sightings are less predictable.

The reserve is also an important birdwatching destination. Depending on the season and location, you may see species such as eagles, vultures, kingfishers, ostriches, secretary birds, and kori bustards.

Your safari guide will help identify different species and explain aspects of their behavior, habitat, and relationship with the wider ecosystem. The experience is not simply about photographing animals; it is also an opportunity to understand how the Masai Mara’s grasslands support one of East Africa’s most productive wildlife ecosystems.

For travelers visiting during the annual wildebeest migration period, typically around July to October, there may be opportunities to witness large herds moving through the Mara ecosystem. The timing and location of migration activity are determined by rainfall and natural animal movements, so specific sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Optional activities may be available at an additional cost, including a hot-air balloon safari and a cultural visit to a Maasai community. These activities should be booked in advance where possible and are subject to availability and local arrangements.

After your final game-viewing activity, you will return to Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner and your second overnight stay.

Day 3

Masai Mara – Nairobi

Your final safari morning begins with an early game drive, when wildlife activity can be particularly rewarding. The cooler morning temperatures often provide comfortable conditions for exploring the reserve, while many animals are active before the heat of the day increases.

After the morning game drive, you will return to the camp for breakfast and check-out. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a short additional wildlife-viewing drive or relaxation at the camp before your transfer to the airstrip.

You will then be transferred to the Mara airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Nairobi. The flight takes approximately one hour, although the exact duration and routing may vary depending on the operating schedule and airstrip arrangements.

On arrival in Nairobi, your representative will meet you and transfer you to either Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport, or your Nairobi hotel, depending on your onward travel arrangements.

This marks the end of your 3-day Masai Mara safari. Your experience will have included scenic flights, guided game drives, two nights in the Mara ecosystem, and opportunities to observe Kenya’s wildlife in its natural environment.
