Angama Mara Lodge, was founded and opened by safari veterans Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald in 2015. The construction process started 11 months before the year it was officially opened. This was a dream come true, as they had a passion for the project after their long careers in creating and operating lodges all around Africa. However, this project marked the highest point in their career.
The name “Angama” in Swahili means “suspended in mid-air”; this is a perfect name for the lodge, as its strategic location overlooks the vast plains of Mara. It features 30 tented suites split into two camps, designed with huge floor-to-ceiling windows, which play a crucial role in providing the guests with a panoramic view of the landscape and wildlife.
Location: How to Get There
You can access Angama Mara in two different ways, either by road or by flight. Angama Mara is a mere 10-minute drive along a private road to the Masai Mara National Reserve, which has a good view of nature, though it’s usually limited due to time.
Angama Mara is just a short and scenic 45-minute flight from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. You can get there aboard one of the regularly scheduled flights from Wilson Airport, which is well connected to all major hubs via carriers like Kenya Airways, Emirates, Air France-KLM, and British Airways.

Angama Mara Lodge comprises 2 camps and a total of 15 well-tented suites. All tents are king suites but can be changed into a twin option. The rooms have been designed for connection and comfort; they are very spacious, thoughtfully designed, and beautifully designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscapes. Once you enter the room, you will find luxurious king-size beds accompanied by ensuite bathrooms with hot showers.

Dining at Angama Mara Lodge is more than just a meal because it’s an experience for everyone. The chefs take pride in blending international cuisine with local Kenyan flavors, all prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, giving your meals a delicious outcome.
Some standout dishes during my stay included flavorful Kenyan beef stew, Swahili coconut fish, homemade soups, freshly baked bread, seasonal tropical fruits, and delicious vegetarian options. Whether it’s breakfast with the panoramic views or a romantic candlelit dinner, every meal feels special.
Activities to do at Angama Mara
There is an abundance of experience for you to explore during your stay at Angama Mara Lodge. Here are a few of my favorite activities while I was there:
Hot Air Balloon Safari: With my cup of coffee, soaring into the sky while watching the sun breaking the light into Mara was one of my favorite activities in the morning. It would be followed by a champagne breakfast in the open savannah while catching a beautiful view of nature. And I think you would love to have such a program during one of your early morning activities.
Walking Safari: While being escorted by a professional guide, I used to walk as long as I liked along the Siria Escarpment. During the walking safari, I would explore the wildlife and the role they play in Masai culture.
Game Drives & Guns: At Angama Mara, game viewing is the order of the day and compulsory, whereby you can wake up and get on the show with a professional ranger and tour guides. Each excursion provides something unique, from the Great Migration of wildebeests crossing the Mara River to lions finishing off a fresh kill.
