The Story Behind Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 through a partnership between Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority to reintroduce the southern white rhinos in Uganda.
The long-term goal of the sanctuary is to build a sustainable rhino population and relocate southern white rhinos back to their original habitat in Uganda’s protected areas after they became extinct due to poaching and civil unrest, and only 6 of them were introduced back to the sanctuary.

However, if you are traveling from Entebbe, follow the Kampala-Gulu highway, and on arrival at Nakitoma Trading Center, turn off the highway and drive another 4 kilometers to the sanctuary.
Although Ziwa Sanctuary does not have its own airstrip, it can be accessed by combining a domestic charter flight with a road transfer. You will take a charter flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Pakuba Airstrip in the Murchison Falls National Park area, taking about an hour, then enjoy a 2-hour road transfer to the sanctuary.
