5-Day Amboseli, Ziwani, Taita Hills & Tsavo East Kenya Safari Tours

This 5-day Kenya safari combines some of southern Kenya’s most distinctive wildlife destinations with a flexible finish at the coast. The journey begins in Nairobi and travels south to Amboseli National Park, where elephants and expansive views toward Mount Kilimanjaro are highlights. From there, the itinerary continues through the Ziwani area and Tsavo West, followed by Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and Tsavo East National Park.

The safari is designed to balance game drives with different wildlife experiences, including an optional night game drive and walking safari in the Ziwani Sanctuary. The final day provides several onward travel options, including Diani Beach, Mombasa or Nairobi.

Because wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable, animals listed in this itinerary should be regarded as representative rather than guaranteed. Your driver-guide will adjust game-drive routes according to wildlife activity, road conditions and seasonal conditions.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Day 1: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park
  • Day 2: Day 2: Amboseli – Ziwani Sanctuary / Tsavo West Area
  • Day 3: Day 3: Ziwani – Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Day 4: Day 4: Taita Hills – Tsavo East National Park
  • Day 5: Day 5: Tsavo East – Mombasa / Diani Beach / Nairobi

Day 1

Nairobi – Amboseli National Park

Your safari begins with an early morning collection from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. You will travel south toward Amboseli National Park, a journey of approximately 4–5 hours depending on traffic, road conditions and the exact starting point.

After arriving in the Amboseli area, you will have lunch and some time to settle into your accommodation before heading out for an afternoon game drive.

Amboseli is particularly renowned for its large elephant population and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. The landscape combines open plains, seasonal wetlands and dry areas, creating opportunities to see elephants, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, giraffes and a variety of bird species.

The afternoon game drive is timed to take advantage of cooler conditions and increased wildlife activity later in the day. Your safari guide will select routes according to recent sightings and prevailing conditions.

Accommodations:

  • Gold Kibo Safari Camp

Day 2

Amboseli – Ziwani Sanctuary / Tsavo West Area

Rise early for a morning game drive in Amboseli. Early morning is often productive for wildlife viewing because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active before the heat of the day increases.

After the game drive, return to the camp for breakfast before checking out and continuing toward the Ziwani area bordering Tsavo West National Park.

You will arrive at Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp or a similar property for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon, take part in a guided walking experience within the private Ziwani Sanctuary. Walking provides a different perspective from a vehicle-based game drive, allowing you to pay closer attention to tracks, plants, smaller animals, birds and other signs of wildlife. Walking activities are conducted according to the sanctuary’s operating procedures and safety requirements.

An optional night game drive can also be arranged where available. This offers an opportunity to experience the sanctuary after dark and look for nocturnal species that are rarely active during conventional daytime game drives. Night drives are subject to availability, park or sanctuary regulations and applicable additional charges.

Accommodations:

  • Gold Voyager Ziwani Camp

Day 3

Ziwani – Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

After breakfast, depart from the Ziwani area and continue toward Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The journey takes you into a landscape characterized by open savannah and the surrounding Taita Hills.

On arrival, check in at Salt Lick Safari Lodge or a similar property and have lunch.

The lodge provides a distinctive safari setting, with elevated accommodation overlooking areas where wildlife may pass. After lunch and some time to relax, head out for an afternoon game drive within the sanctuary.

Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its varied wildlife and provides a different safari experience from the larger national parks visited earlier in the itinerary. Depending on the season and local wildlife movements, you may encounter elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and other species. Predator sightings are possible but never guaranteed.

Your guide will use current wildlife activity, weather and road conditions to determine the most productive areas to explore.

Activities:

Accommodations:

  • Gold Salt Lick Safari Lodge

Day 4

Taita Hills – Tsavo East National Park

Begin the day with an early morning game drive in Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. Morning conditions can be favorable for wildlife viewing before temperatures rise.

Return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out and continuing toward Tsavo East National Park.

Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s major wildlife areas and is particularly associated with its vast semi-arid landscapes and elephants that may appear reddish because of the area’s characteristic red soil. The park supports a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, hippos and predators.

After arriving at your lodge, enjoy lunch before setting out on an afternoon game drive. Your guide will explore suitable wildlife areas based on current sightings, seasonal conditions and the amount of time available.

The afternoon provides another opportunity to photograph wildlife against Tsavo East’s distinctive scenery. While lions and other predators occur in the park, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Activities:

Accommodations:

  • Gold Voi Wildlife Lodge

Day 5

Tsavo East – Mombasa / Diani Beach / Nairobi

Start your final safari day with an early morning game drive in Tsavo East. Dawn is one of the most rewarding periods for wildlife viewing because temperatures are cooler and many animals, including predators, can be active.

Return for breakfast before checking out and beginning your departure from the park. Depending on your travel plans, you may have a final game drive while exiting Tsavo East, giving you one last opportunity to observe wildlife before leaving the safari environment.

Continue toward your selected destination with a lunch stop along the way.

You can choose to end the safari in Diani Beach, Mombasa or Nairobi. If you prefer rail travel, an onward connection can also be arranged subject to the available schedule and your booking arrangements.

Diani Beach is an especially convenient option for travelers combining their safari with a coastal holiday. Those continuing to Nairobi can use road or rail arrangements depending on their itinerary.
