We had scheduled our honeymoon in February 2027 (Calving Season!!), but unfortunately we’ll probably have to postpone our honeymoon because my fiance may have to get surgery (recovery time is about 4-6 months). What other months would be a great time to go?

August and September 2027 would be my top recommendations for postponing your Tanzania honeymoon, especially if you still want to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration. Although you would miss the main February calving season, you would have the opportunity to experience another spectacular stage of the migration, including possible Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti.

First of all, I’m sorry to hear about your fiancé’s possible surgery. I hope everything goes well and that the recovery is smooth. The good news is that Tanzania is a wonderful safari destination throughout the year, so postponing your honeymoon doesn’t necessarily mean missing out on an incredible wildlife experience.

If your fiancé needs four to six months to recover, I would consider the following months, depending on when the surgery takes place and when the medical team confirms that travelling is appropriate.

June 2027: This is an excellent time to visit Tanzania if you prefer pleasant weather, beautiful landscapes and generally good wildlife viewing. The long rains are usually coming to an end, and the dry season is beginning. The migration herds are often moving through the Western Corridor of Serengeti, around the Grumeti region. Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti are also wonderful destinations to include.

July 2027: July is another fantastic month for a honeymoon safari. The weather is generally dry, wildlife becomes easier to spot around water sources, and the migration herds may be moving towards Northern Serengeti. Some Mara River crossings can begin during this period, although their timing depends on rainfall and herd movements.

August and September 2027: These would be my personal favourites if you want a memorable alternative to February’s calving season. The migration is often concentrated in Northern Serengeti, particularly around Kogatende and the Mara River. You may have opportunities to witness large wildebeest herds gathering near the river and potentially crossing into Kenya’s Masai Mara. River crossings are never guaranteed, but the general wildlife viewing during these months is excellent.

One thing to remember is that August and September are popular safari months, so accommodation prices can be higher and the main wildlife-viewing areas busier. I would recommend spending at least three nights in Northern Serengeti rather than rushing through the area.

October 2027: October is another good option, especially if you prefer a slightly more relaxed safari. The dry season generally continues, wildlife viewing remains rewarding, and some migration herds may still be in Northern Serengeti or beginning their journey south. Early October can be particularly interesting, although the location of the herds varies each year.

If the calving season itself was the main reason you chose February, you could also consider late January or February 2028, provided that works with your plans. This would give you another opportunity to visit Ndutu and Southern Serengeti during the traditional calving period.

For a honeymoon, I would also suggest combining Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater and a few relaxing nights in Zanzibar. After several early morning game drives, spending time on the beach can be a lovely way to finish your trip.

At Ravina Tours and Travels, we help couples plan personalized Tanzania honeymoon safaris around their preferred travel dates, accommodation choices and wildlife interests. We can adjust an itinerary to suit the season, whether that means visiting Ndutu during calving season or spending more time in Northern Serengeti during the Mara River crossing period.

My recommendation would be September 2027, assuming your fiancé has recovered fully and is medically cleared to travel. It offers a wonderful combination of dry-season wildlife viewing, possible migration crossings and beautiful safari conditions.

Most importantly, don’t feel pressured to travel before your fiancé is ready. Safari days can involve long drives on rough roads, so comfort and recovery should come first.

Wishing your fiancé a successful surgery and a smooth recovery. Your dream Tanzania honeymoon will still be waiting for you!
